Builder Favored Candidates See Success in May Elections

Both municipal and state level candidates in key races on Dallas BA’s watch list saw success in May.

Of key interest was the city of Denton, where Mayor Gerard Hudspeth, who has supported policy that is understanding of the value and benefit home building brings to his city, won re-election. Chris Watts, former Denton Mayor and another friend of home building and small businesses, won election to an open at-large council seat, making for his return to the city council. With the expected growth in that area of Denton County, it is important to have officials who understand the need for attainable housing.

In Prosper, Marcus Ray won re-election to council, as did Mayor Ron Jensen and Councilman John Lopez in Grand Prairie.

There were multiple primary runoff elections featuring builder supported candidates around the state in late May. Two key races in the Dallas BA service area were for Texas House Districts 61 and 63. Freddy Frazier, a former McKinney council member who has had the support of HOMEPAC of Greater Dallas, won the runoff and will be his party’s nominee for District 61. In District 63, builder supported candidate and former Flower Mound council member Ben Bumgarner was successful in his primary runoff. A statewide race watched by many was the Republican Primary for Texas Attorney General. Attorney General Ken Paxton won that primary runoff.

The coming November general elections will have a major impact on home building and the economy in general. Members are encouraged to keep an eye open for updates from Dallas BA and TAB.
