Builders Should Remain Aware of Adoption of the 2023 National Electrical Code

The Texas Commission of Licensing and Regulation on Aug. 1 voted to adopt the 2023 National Electrical Code (NEC) with an effective date of September 1, 2023. Local government entities will be following suit with the likely adoption of the 2023 NEC to be effective on that date or soon thereafter.

Builders should remain aware of this and other codes in the municipalities and counties where they work. The 2023 NEC includes revisions to section 210.52(C)(2) that, while installing an electrical receptacle at a kitchen island or peninsula countertop or work surface is optional, does restrict how receptacles in those locations can be installed. As builders work to provide homebuyers a choice, they should be aware of design impacts of the rule.

The Texas Occupations Code requires the Commission to adopt the revised NEC as the electrical code for the state every three years.
