Executive Officer Phil Crone Bids Dallas BA Farewell

Executive Officer Phil Crone will step down from that position effective July 7 after accepting a position as Vice President of Leading Builders of America.

In his new role, he will be heavily involved with the code development process and with numerous legislative and regulatory challenges facing the housing industry across the nation.

Phil started working for the Dallas BA’s government affairs team in 2006 while attending law school at SMU. In 2012, he became the Association’s seventh Executive Officer.

‘We been very fortunate to have Phil at the helm of the Association as well as his participation at the state and national levels.  Not only has he influenced policy that enables the homebuying community to afford homes, he has guided the Dallas BA to greater heights, and we’ve earned many awards and achievements under his tutelage. In addition to those accomplishments, he has participated in many community service activities around the Dallas area and has impacted many lives including those less fortunate and those who have served in our military. We hope not to say goodbye to Phil but we will see you down the road as he broadens his outreach to the housing industry.’

– Kent Conine, Past Dallas BA & TAB President, Past NAHB
Chair & National Housing Hall of Fame Inductee

‘Phil is a huge advocate of housing affordability and is always at the forefront of current proposed municipal ity policy changes that can directly impact the ability to purchase a home. During the covid pandemic, when local counties did not want to recognize the housing industry as essential, and we faced the risk of being shut down, Phil was instrumental in making his voice heard to keep the housing industry recognized as essential, allowing home building operations to continue through the pandemic.’

– John Porizek, M/I Homes of DFW, Dallas BA President

‘Phil built respect among all the communities that the Dallas Builders Association serves. They know we are committed to housing and that we speak for the industry with a balanced perspective. The Dallas BA’s reputation as the honest broker for the housing industry in the regional, state and national government arena is largely due to Phil’s consistent leadership and depth of expertise. For these efforts we will be eternally grateful.’

– Alan Hoffmann, Hoffmann Homes, Dallas BA Past President

‘Phil has grown into a top leader in the Dallas area home building scene. He was instrumental in keeping our members and industry working during the early days of Covid. He worked countless hours with the City of Dallas to aid in the permitting debacle and held many of Dallas’ leaders accountable to get the issue resolved.  He has helped to legitimize the Dallas BA as the go-to resource for any and all things construction related. He has helped to author and pass legislation at the state level to reduce the cost of construction as well as blocking product mandates that tied builders’ hands and drove up the cost of new construction. Phil has been a shining beacon in the rough and choppy waters that is sometimes the home building industry.’

– Michael Turner, Dallas BA Past President

Following is Phil’s open letter to the Association membership.

Thank you for the honor and privilege of working with you for the last 17 years. Our journey together has been truly fulfilling, and I am profoundly grateful for all that has been afforded to me during my tenure. I have gained lifelong friends and I have benefited tremendously from your collective wisdom and support.

While it is with a heavy heart that I leave the Dallas BA, I am looking forward to the next phase of my career. I will continue to do my best to keep our industry in the business of ensuring that everyone has a roof over their head and an affordable place to call home.

Working with our dedicated team here at the Dallas BA, I have witnessed firsthand the profound impact we have made in building the nation’s strongest housing market. I am immensely proud of our accomplishments, which include emerging strongly from the Great Recession, forming lasting partnerships with Operation Finally Home and Collin College, and launching successful programs, events and initiatives, including those that kept us working safely during the COVID-19 crisis and rebuilding from the damage our office sustained during the winter storm in 2021.

I’m forever thankful for you entrusting me with the roles and responsibilities of Executive Officer at a young age and during challenging times for the Association more than a decade ago. Thank you to past presidents Keller Webster, the late Joe Chamberlain, Jeff Dworkin, Frank Murphy, Donnie Evans, Michael Turner, Alan Hoffmann, Matt Robinson, Justin Webb, Matt Mitchell and Andrew Pieper, as well as our current President, John Porizek. Your passion and dedication made my time as Executive Officer an enjoyable experience and will continue to be a positive example for future Association leaders, including my successor.

I am confident that the Dallas BA will continue to thrive, thanks to our experienced, talented, and dedicated staff, as well as the passion and support of you, our volunteer leadership. As such, I look forward to witnessing the Association’s ongoing success.

Please accept my heartfelt thanks for the opportunity of working with you and the entire team at the Dallas Builders Association. The memories and friendships Heidi and I have formed during my time here will remain with us for the rest of our lives.
