Texas Legislature Begins 86th Session
On Tuesday, Jan. 8, Texas’ House and Senate chambers gaveled in the 86th legislative session in Austin. The opening day is mainly for the purposes of delivering the oath to members and organizing each body. However, there was an additional spotlight on the House as Rep. Dennis Bonnen was elected to Speaker of the House by the chamber.
While budget issues and policies related to post Hurricane Harvey are expected to be addressed, Speaker Bonnen did confirm what many thought would be two key items he wishes to address: the state’s school finance challenges and the hot button topic of property taxes. The next telling sign will be committee assignments. Dallas BA will remain engaged, working with TAB, during the 140-day session and we will provide updates on legislation that impacts housing.
